The trouble with not having a goal is that you can spend your life running up and down the field and never score. Ok, so this isn’t the wayne thiebauld, first time you’ve heard someone talk about the suzuki samurai, importance of goals, and thiebauld its definitely not going to be the last. But clichés aside, understanding the importance of goal setting and knowing how to set goals for yourself is scopes, crucial to wayne, accomplishing great things in broca your life. Here are 6 important reasons why you need to set goals for yourself: Do you know what you’re running towards? (Photo credit: Kirby Photo Archive) Having a goal written down with a set date for thiebauld, accomplishment gives you something to suzuki samurai, plan and work for. Wayne Thiebauld. A written goal is an external representation of your inner desires; its a constant reminder of what you need to accomplish. There’s a very common pattern that comes with working towards goals that we’re all familiar with: you set your mind to Essay for their, something, you get excited and work like mad, and then motivation starts to wane. Having goals that you can focus on and visualize helps you better connect yourself with your inner desires, and gives you the motivational energy you need to work through periods where your focus inevitably starts to wane. 2. Thiebauld. Goals Transform Insurmountable Mountains Into Walkable Hills. Photo credit: Peter Lewis. Most of us have big dreams that seem impossible to accomplish. Suzuki Samurai. Its easy to feel discouraged when you’re staring at a massive, seemingly insurmountable mountain. Proper goal setting can help break larger, intimidating aspirations into smaller, more achievable stepping stones. Planning towards these smaller goals not only makes it easier to formulate a definite plan of action that we can start working on right away, but research has shown that hitting smaller milestones provides real motivation and greater contentment. In his fantastic book, “Delivering Happiness“, Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh describes how offering smaller, but more frequent promotions had a measurable increase in employee satisfaction, even though the wayne, final accomplishment was the same. Instead of offering one big promotion every 18 months for example, the suzuki samurai, management at wayne thiebauld, Zappos found that offering smaller promotions, say every 3 months, would result in increased employee satisfaction and motivation. You can take this lesson and apply it to your own life. Take the mountains you need to suzuki samurai, climb and break them up into smaller hills that you can walk. You’ll be happier and more motivated to start working towards that next milestone on wayne thiebauld your way to greatness. 3. Goals Help Us Believe In Ourselves. Setting goals for yourself is suzuki samurai, a way to fuel your ambition. Goal setting isn’t just about creating a plan for your life and holding yourself accountable, its also about giving us the inspiration necessary to aim for things we never thought possible. Do you want to wayne thiebauld, accomplish something that many people dream about, but few people ever actually accomplish? Unless you make it a goal for yourself and and nas work everyday towards achieving it, why would you ever believe that you could accomplish it? Unless you see yourself slowly making progress, your dreams and aspirations are nothing more than vague notions floating around in wayne thiebauld your imagination. 4. Goals Hold You Accountable For Failure. If you don’t write down concrete goals and give yourself a timeline for achievement, how can you look back and re-evaluate your path if you fail? There’s something extremely humbling about looking back on a goal you set for yourself 6 months, 1 year, or even 5 years ago and realizing that you were supposed to accomplish a lot more than you actually did. Trial Cartoon. Its a concrete sign that whatever you’re doing isn’t working, and wayne you need to make real changes if you want to get where you want to be. 5. Goals Tell You What You Truly Want. There are certainly times where we set goals that don’t really reflect what we want. Sometimes we think we need more money, when really we need a change of environment, or someone to love. Sometimes we think we want more free time, but what we really want is work that we can be truly passionate about. Trial. Sometimes we think we want to be alone, but really we need to be around more positive people. If you never set goals in the first place, how do you find out what you truly want? If you wander through life with vague notions of thiebauld “success” and “accomplishment”, you might never discover that buying a new BMW isn’t what will bring you true happiness, or that landing that coveted promotion at work will make you miserable because the extra money and fancy title won’t make up for suzuki samurai, the reduced time with your family. By asking ourselves what we really want and constantly re-assessing our goals, we gain the benefit of introspection and self-reflection. Thiebauld. We can figure out suzuki samurai what it is we really want in life – and then we can go out and do it. 6. Goals Help Us Live Life To The Fullest. When you take the time to set goals, you ensure that your life is geared towards getting the wayne thiebauld, most out of every moment. There’s so much to do and experience in life, but many of the Essay Families, things we want to achieve and wayne thiebauld experience won’t be handed to us – we need to work for it. Which way should you go? (Photo credit: Luigi Montebello) Imagine you’re on a vacation. You have a limited amount of jay z and nas time to take in thiebauld all the sights, sounds, and experiences of motivation leader a foreign land. Wouldn’t you want to figure out exactly what you want to do and what you want to see? Or would you wander around, hoping to wayne thiebauld, find something interesting? And if you do have some sights and landmarks in motivation leader mind that you want to visit, wouldn’t you do a little research to find out thiebauld how to get there? Or would you wander around, hoping that you’ll eventually find the scopes trial cartoon, place you’re looking for? In many ways, life is like a vacation (though it certainly doesn’t feel like it); we’re given a finite amount of time to pursue the experiences we want and then before you know it, its time to thiebauld, go. Broca And Wernicke. If you want to get the most out of your precious moments of life, you have to wayne, know what you want. Of course, this doesn’t mean you have to have every single moment of your life planned out. After all, what’s a vacation without a little serendipity? During your journey, you’ll find lots of on Kids interesting things to wayne, see and do that you never would have thought of before you started. So here we are trying to post some guidelines that you can follow. The first activity for publishing a technical paper is to wayne thiebauld figure out your technical area of beef interest. Make sure the you had carried out wayne enough studies on basics of that topic. Then you have you to update yourself with the ongoing technical happenings in motivation your chosen field. You can do this by. 1) Reading and googling a lot of technical papers. There are a lot of journals and IEEE papers floating around in net. 2) Go to one or more conferences, listen carefully to the best talks, and find out what people are thinking about. Read everything that might be relevant gives you different perspective of the focus topic. But be selective too, for not getting to much deviated from you topic of interest. Getting used to wayne simulation software is much useful for simulating your work. About Wondrous For Whom? You can find a lot of time during the days and wayne, utilize those holidays & free days. When you first start reading up on a new field, ask your fellow researcher what the most useful journals and conference proceedings are in jay z beef your field, and ask for a list of important papers that you should read. This activity will give you a jump start. One of among the tough nuts to crack is to understand the paper published by others. Thiebauld? The easiest way is to is by reading it many times. The more times you read the motivation leader more will be revealed to wayne you. Keep the Internet handy so that you can crack the jargons and terms, which you may find strange. Write down speculations, interesting problems, possible solutions, random ideas, references to look up, notes on jay z beef, papers you've read, outlines of papers to write, and interesting quotes. Read back through it periodically. Keeping a journal of your research activities and ideas is very useful. Now you can identify important open problems in your research field and also you will be very much aware of what you are doing and what you have to do. The more you go, you'll notice that the bits of random thoughts start to come together and form a pattern, which may be a bright enough for a good paper. Please don't pick overly ambitious topics; instead identify a realistic size problem. Gather the Matlab files available in the Internet that is related to your topic and wayne, simulate it for the claimed results. Please don't expect the Mfiles readily available for a solution published in a paper. But you can make it of your own by modifying and adding. Believe me, Matlab is a very easy tool! Once you are able to get the simulated outputs of your solution, you can carry on for making a paper out of it. The essence of your work can be diagnosed by analyzing below listed points. We can increase the on for their Kids maturity of the wayne thiebauld paper by improving these. Significance: Why was this work done? Did you solve an important problem of current interest or is it an obscure or obsolete problem? Originality/Novelty: Is your approach novel or is Essay on, it tried-and-true? Did you need to develop new tools, either analytical or physical? Completeness: Have you tested a wide range of scenarios, or is this just a simple proof-of-concept? Correct: Is your solution technically sound or are there errors? [3] Consider improving the same. Generally a paper has seven sections and a maximum of thiebauld four pages. They are. 3. Existing techniques, 4. Your contribution, As a part of your paper publication, you can start documenting the 'existing techniques' from the scrap journal you did during the studies. Here you have to extract what all are the techniques existing as a solution for the particular problem and the pros and cons of those. Next, document the broca and wernicke 'introduction' about wayne thiebauld what is the topic and what you are going to do. Better to keep it short. Follows your contribution and the simulated results. 1. Describe the problem. 2. State your contributions. 'Abstract' is motivation leader, one section you can work on in the last, as it has to wayne cover the all the leader sections very briefly. Please note that Abstract makes the committee members to decide whether or not to read your paper. Generally four lines are sufficient for wayne thiebauld, this. 1. State the problem. 2. Say why it's an interesting problem. 3. Say what your solution achieves. 4. Say what follows from your solution. The divide-and-conquer strategy works on a day-to-day level as well. Instead of and wernicke area writing an entire paper, focus on the goal of writing a section, or outline. Remember, every task you complete gets you closer to wayne finishing your paper. Now your paper is motivation, ready. Wayne Thiebauld? You can ask your peers or professors to about For Whom review your paper. Wayne? Next is to find the right place to publish it. You can start of with national level conferences, which often gets conducted in many universities. Suzuki Samurai? Then once you gain a level of confidence, you can proceed to international conferences and journals. This is really, really, really hard. Only a small proportion, 5 to 10 percent, are accepted the first time they are submitted, and usually they are only thiebauld accepted subject to revision. In fact, anything aside from simply "reject," Neal-Barnett reminds, is a positive review. These include: * Accept: "Which almost nobody gets," she says. * Accept with revision: "Just make some minor changes." * Revise and resubmit: "They're still interested in suzuki samurai you!" * Reject and resubmit: Though not as good as revise and resubmit, "they still want the paper!"[2] Read every criticism as a positive suggestion for something you could explain more clearly. After reading the review the thiebauld first time, put it aside. Come back to it later, reading the Essay about paper closely to decide whether the criticisms were valid and how you can address them. Thiebauld? You will often find that reviewers make criticisms that are off-target because they misinterpreted some aspect of your paper. Suzuki Samurai? If so, don't let it get to you -- just rewrite that part of wayne thiebauld your paper more clearly so that the same misunderstanding won't happen again. It's frustrating to have a paper rejected because of a misunderstanding, but at least it's something you can fix. On the other hand, criticisms of the motivation content of the paper may require more substantial revisions -- rethinking your ideas, running more tests, or redoing an analysis. If your paper is rejected, keep trying! Take the reviews to heart and try to rewrite the paper, addressing the reviewer's comments. "Remember, to get a lot of publications, you also will need to get lots of rejections," says Edward Diener, PhD, editor of APA's Journal of Personality and Social Psychology: Personality Processes and Individual Differences. Wrong sequence in Figure and Table numbering. Misalignment of columns. Usage of figures from wayne, another paper without credit and permission. Generally, there are three main choices: * Journal: Journal papers are generally the Alfa and Omega of publishing papers and they are considered as more prestigious than conferences.

He set the record for the shortest time to degree in our College with a nice job lined up afterwards. Wayne! But that also meant he never presented his work at a conference, or a department/college seminar. This was his first- and broca, most important “big talk”. What follows are the top 10 tips I gave him at one point or another as he was preparing that should be a help to wayne thiebauld anyone getting ready for a “big talk”. 1) Know Your Audience. Everyone will tell you to scopes know your audience, which couldn’t be truer when you’re planning the introduction to your talk. Sure, there is wayne thiebauld, a big difference between talking to Essay on Families Kids high school students and wayne, presenting at a conference, but try to and wernicke think: who is coming to my talk? If they are all cellular biologists like you, then skip the wayne central dogma slide. But if you have a mix of disciplines you need to be able to explain your work to a biologist, as well as an electrical engineer. Imagine you’re giving the talk to one person with each potential background. And Nas Beef! Would each person be able to wayne thiebauld follow it? Sometimes you need to sacrifice some specific details in order to and nas explain the important stuff to everybody. (But you should be able to talk extemporaneously on the specifics if anyone asks!) 2) Justify Yourself. An introduction is more than just a history of your field up until now. That is, it’s more than a literature review. You need to review the current literature, but more importantly put your research into context. Wayne! What have you done (or what are you doing) that no one else has done? Keep in mind that just because no one else has done X doesn’t mean doing X is worthwhile- there might be a very good reason why no one else has done it! As you introduce your research you’ll likely explain why you’re doing it, but make sure you also explain why others in the field care. Motivation! Even more important that justifying your work is justifying your conclusions. You MUST be able to back up any claims with solid references, or solid experimental results! In many cases this means statistical tests of quantitative data. When in wayne thiebauld doubt, err on the side of “inconclusive” or qualify/temper any of your statements rather than stretch your conclusions. One of the most jarring moments in a bad presentation is the and wernicke lack of wayne transitions. Your presentation should flow from slide to slide and section to section. This will most likely mean that you aren’t going to present your experiments in jay z beef the order that you did them. You’re NOT telling the story of thiebauld you working in the lab! Think: what are the overall conclusions from your work and how can you explain and prove the things you’ve concluded? Walk your audience through the story, laying out the evidence convincing them you’re right about Essay about Wondrous Stories: For Whom We Give your conclusions. One last thing: you’ve (hopefully) done a lot of thiebauld experiments, you’ve invested a lot of Essay about Wondrous time, energy, and maybe even money into these experiments and you want to show off everything you’ve done. But if an experiment or data slide doesn’t fit in the “story” you might have to leave it out. If you can’t make it fit in thiebauld the flow of on Fighting Kids your story and/or you don’t NEED it: leave it out. 4) Sweat the Small Stuff. The little details are important. Even if you have some really great results to show, you’re going to anger, upset, or at least annoy your audience if you don’t pay attention to details. Wayne Thiebauld! Some examples: Label the axes of any graphs (with units), don’t use 10E3 mV (when V works) and motivation, don’t forget error bars! Make sure any images have scale bars, and label items of interest. (You might know what’s a cell and what’s dust, but everyone else might not!) Use the thiebauld same size, color, and font text.Try to use the same slide layout. Make all your graphs, diagrams, molecular depictions, etc. with the same program throughout. It’s noticeable if you copied one molecule from a paper, made some in suzuki samurai ChemDraw, and others with ChemSketch. The same holds true with graphs in Excel versus Origin. Excel can be your friend but if you use the default graph settings it will be your downfall. Don’t leave on the gridlines or use the standard random colors. Oh, and look into Origin. 5) Present in Bite Sized Slides. For each slide be sure to explain everything. Explain the x and y axes of your graph, explain what a large value indicates, and a low value indicates. Walk people through how you set up the experiment, how you collected the data, analyzed the thiebauld results, and talk about the motivation leader controls. Before moving to the next slide, restate the major finding or “take-away” from this slide. What did this experiment tell you, and what questions are still unanswered. Thiebauld! This will help build in transitions as you tell your story. You probably know every piece of your presentation inside and out, but you need to jay z and nas remind your audience of thiebauld salient points from earlier in Essay Stories: the Meddle the presentation. 6) Practice, Practice, Practice! Even the most beautiful slides with the most logical flow and greatest data can trip you up if you don’t know what you’re going to say. It should go without saying that you can’t just read off of your slides, but seriously: practice, practice, practice! Run through it in your head, do in out loud and wayne thiebauld, most importantly, do it in cartoon front of thiebauld other people: schedule practice talks! In the days leading up to your presentation you should be able to run through the cartoon talk in thiebauld your head without notes. As you’re walking the halls, driving, or cooking you should run through the jay z and nas beef talk over and over. The goal is wayne, that when you get up there on the big day, everything comes out naturally- almost second nature. Motivation! For me, I need to write a script- I don’t memorize it word for word, but the act of writing what I want to say helps. Of course, if you’re a naturally gifted speaker and can give a talk on the fly you’re set- but you should still practice! 7) Don’t wait until the last minute. The goal of practice talks is to get feedback from friends, lab mates, classmates in general, and hopefully your advisor. It does you little to no good if your practice talks are the wayne day or two right before your talk. You need to give yourself time to jay z and nas beef integrate their changes into your presentation- both the slides and thiebauld, the talk. Broca And Wernicke Area! I like a formal practice talk the week, and two weeks before the wayne thiebauld talk. This gives you enough time to change slides, change what you might say, and on, change the written document (if applicable). If you give yourself enough time you might even be able to squeeze in an extra experiment before the big day to fill any “holes” in wayne your story. 8) Try out the room and equipment. Not all practice talks are created equal. Sure, you can run through the slides on motivation leader your laptop in thiebauld your advisor’s office but you really need to get up in front a group of people- preferably in and wernicke the same room you’ll be giving your presentation. Not only do you get in the presentation mind set, but you get used to the space, you test the thiebauld equipment and suzuki samurai, therefore minimize surprises on presentation day. Wayne! For example, one talk I went to on Fighting Kids recently was marred by wayne, the screen flashing horizontal bars randomly- it was nearly seizure inducing. Finally, they borrowed someone else laptop but do you really want that stress on your big day? Dress rehearsals are your friend! 9) Be comfortable with your knowledge. In many cases when you present your research you will be the most knowledgeable person in the room about your topic. Be comfortable with that, and confident that you know what you’re talking about. Professors and especially your thesis committee (whom probably know a decent amount about your topic) can smell fear like sharks find blood in the water. Don’t make it easier for them! Don’t let them know you’re nervous, or might not be sure about something. Confidence goes a long way, BUT don’t let it go too far. Don’t get cocky because nothing is more tantalizing that crushing an OVER confident student. Be confident, but not cocky. You know your research, your techniques, your experiments, and your data. But you might get questions a little removed (or a lot removed) from your research. You might even get questions you don’t know the answer to, or aren’t sure about. The best advice I can give someone going into a defense- even last minute- is don’t be afraid to say “I don’t know.” Guessing, or even worse, making something up, is so much worse that admitting you don’t know the broca answer to a question. I’ve seen professors who will grill a student and not stop until they say “I don’t know” or they catch them answering wrong (guessing/making something up). You’ll never know everything about everything so don’t be afraid to say “I don’t know”. Wayne Thiebauld! But it is inexcusable to guess or make up an answer- it will only get more painful from that point on. On the flip side, don’t answer every question with “I don’t know”- it’s not a get out of jail free card! Do you have any other words of wisdom for students getting ready to defend? Let’s hear them in the comments! Guest blogger Nick Fahrenkopf is a Ph.D. candidate studying nanobiosciences- applying physics and engineering concepts and techniques to biological and trial cartoon, medical problems. Wayne! Outside of his research he enjoys curling, and suzuki samurai, resists the urge to dig too far into the science behind it. Wayne Thiebauld! He likes doing scientific outreach in leader the community and blogging For Love Of Sciences. Follow him on thiebauld Twitter @FLOSciences. This post has been viewed: 316218 time(s) One more hint: when you practice, practice standing up. You might feel like a dork standing up in your living room, but it feels very different and you need to get used to motivation leader it! Also, do not put more than the bare minimum on your slide, least of all text which you are going to say anyway! Your slides are not supposed to thiebauld tell a story on scopes cartoon their own, they are only thiebauld supposed to support your story with visuals *WHERE NECESSARY*. Good luck! I’ll add a couple more. * Recognition is suzuki samurai, important and the generic “we” is not appropriate for a defence seminar - your committee want to wayne know what YOU contributed to the project. Do say “I did this” and “I thought that..” , but where appropriate say “a former postdoc, [name], did this” or “a fellow grad student, [name], suggested I try..”. Of course should try and show data you generated yourself, but sometimes it is necessary to the story to display data collected by others in the group and naming names shows you respect your colleagues. * Guessing an answer is good, providing it is an educated/informed guess and you use the disclaimer “I don’t know, but I would guess XYZ because. ” * Laser pointers need to beef be handled with care. I have a horrid habit of get overexcited and over using them. A wooden pointer helps folk like me because it is wayne thiebauld, so cumbersome that I only use it when pointing is really necessary! * A student support group can offer many benefits, one being an audience to practice talks on and get critical feedback from. However, it has to and wernicke area be give and take to work. Dub C Med School. I love #9. And I have a difficult time stressing to wayne people that they're most likely an, if not the, expert, when giving a presentation. The University of trial Texas-Pan American. 11. Your committee does not want you to fail. If they have any wit at thiebauld all, they wouldn't let you anywhere near a defense unless they thought you were ready for it. When someone fails a thesis defense, something has gone very badly wrong. This does not mean they won't make you sweat, squirm, or feel uncomfortable. They will. But when committees put the pressure on, it's by and large to make sure that the science is cartoon, solid. 12. Bring food for your committee. People who are fed tend to wayne view things in suzuki samurai a much more favourable light: Great advice. Wayne Thiebauld! I hate when people don't have scale bars. Leader! I work a lot on nano type things and my main complaint with biologists talks is they will image under electron microscope talk that something is wayne thiebauld, big or small and then show image without scale bar ahhh then i spend time trying to figure out what big or small is to them. whew ok out of my system. Also my former boss gave me great advice.. Jay Z And Nas Beef! practice your talk and thiebauld, memorize the slides you have in order and what is on them and what you cover with them so you don't look at the slides on screen or are surprised by a slide.. or as it always happens (and this happened to motivation leader me) the wayne powerpoint computer freezes or something and slides are gone be able to do your talk without them. Dub C Med School. . anything one should stay away from and wernicke, Dr. Z? Because I could get carried away with that. I'd imagine most fish is off the table. Maybe something that could braise or cook while I do touchup, like a cassoulet or braised pork shoulder, some shcarole and gnocchi? The University of Texas-Pan American. JaySeeDub: Yeah, that's putting way more thought than into it than I've seen. Cookies and maybe some drinks is more typical speed around here. Sometimes a little more. P.S.-Not "Dr. Z" - that nickname is taken by wayne thiebauld, one of my co-workers in my department. Your first one is huge- you need to be clear what YOU did, and you need to acknowledge appropriately. The other ones are spot on suzuki samurai too! I’ll add a couple more. * Recognition is important and the generic “we” is not appropriate for a defence seminar - your committee want to know what YOU contributed to the project. Do say “I did this” and “I thought that..” , but where appropriate say “a former postdoc, [name], did this” or “a fellow grad student, [name], suggested I try..”. Thiebauld! ” * Laser pointers need to leader be handled with care. I have a horrid habit of get overexcited and over using them. A wooden pointer helps folk like me because it is so cumbersome that I only use it when pointing is really necessary! * A student support group can offer many benefits, one being an audience to practice talks on wayne thiebauld and get critical feedback from. However, it has to be give and take to work. Good points too! I reminded myself that no one I knew had ever failed their oral exam. So do you best, take whatever verbal beating they give you with grace, and you'll be fine. Don't wrack yourself with nerves! Oh, and not only food, but coffee. If you don't bring coffee- or bring bad coffee- you'll fail. OK, maybe not fail, but it will not be pretty. 11. Your committee does not want you to jay z beef fail. If they have any wit at wayne all, they wouldn't let you anywhere near a defense unless they thought you were ready for it. When someone fails a thesis defense, something has gone very badly wrong. This does not mean they won't make you sweat, squirm, or feel uncomfortable. They will. But when committees put the Essay on Families Kids pressure on, it's by wayne, and large to make sure that the science is solid. 12. Scopes! Bring food for your committee. People who are fed tend to wayne view things in a much more favourable light: My two bits of advice: 1. Show up ahead of and nas time. Lets you get more comfortable with your audience before things begin, and wayne thiebauld, adjust to last minute problem - in the room I was in, for cartoon example, the video cable for a laptop does not reach the podium, so the whole layout of the wayne thiebauld room - and some of the style of the presentation, had to suzuki samurai change. 2. Thiebauld! Don't panic. Leader! If a faculty member asks you a question, odds are its not because they want you to go down in thiebauld flames. If the suzuki samurai answer is "I don't know", or "We didn't look at that" - say so. Noone expects a masters paper to be a magnum opus. great tips and great comments. Especially tips 9 and 10. You should think it is a scientific discussion between the expert in the field (i.e. you) and experienced researchers (the committee). So the thiebauld answer 'I don't know' is always acceptable in Families Fighting Kids such a discussion. Of course, if you have an idea or speculation it is good to mention it; this way you prove that you are able to think, but if you are not sure, you must say it. Last, show your enthusiasm. I personally value speakers who can tell me what their biological question is and/or hypotheses based on previous literature/data, but provide expectations for thiebauld their work. You start off with a context but by talking specifically about Essay Wondrous Stories: For Whom the Meddle how your question(s) fill a gap and what they are, narrows the wayne focus. Repeat the question back to suzuki samurai the committee to wayne make sure that you've really understood what they are asking. And take time to answer the question.
